Located at the flowing together of three great rivers - the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac Rivers - Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia, is a busy city of more than 2 million people and is the country's profitable, economic and political hub. The city is now a center of diverse economic and urban development and is fast changing into a thriving city with bistros and boutique hotels lining the riverfront, smart little silk boutiques and galleries dotting the side streets, a burgeoning arts scene and a heady dusk-to-dawn nightlife.
Phnom Penh is steep in history and offers quite a few cultural and historical sites to visit. The city was under French colonial control from 1863-1953, increased in self-government in the 1960s, evacuated under the Khmer Rouge in the late 70s and is now revitalized.
